Interchange Illawarra has a pool of approximately 350 experienced, well trained staff, support workers and volunteers who provide person centred support to meet the individual needs of people with disabilities. This can include, but is not limited to:
Support Coordination, Assistance with Daily Living, Community Access, Short Term Accommodation, and Short Holidays
All staff, support workers and volunteers are screened, reference checked, have completed orientation and induction and continue to undertake other relevant training such as; first aid and disability-specific training.

Support Workers
Part time and casual support workers provide direct support to people with disabilities on a paid basis. Workers support people with disabilities, their carers and their families at short notice in ‘one off’ or emergency care situations. They may also be called upon to provide regular ongoing support.
Volunteers
Interchange Illawarra is also supported by volunteers who are registered to provide person centred support through all services provided by this organisation in an unpaid capacity.
Volunteers are often provided the opportunity to become casual or part time workers with Interchange Illawarra after they have completed further training and gained relevant experience.
Rights of Volunteers/Support Workers
Interchange Illawarra recognises that volunteers and support workers are an integral part of the service and have the right to:
Job satisfaction
Participate in an orientation course before commencing with Interchange Illawarra
Be given opportunities to gain further knowledge of disabilities issues, if they desire further information
Be informed about the organisation, policies, procedures and programs
Receive sound guidance and direction from someone who is experienced, well informed and who has the time to invest in giving guidance
Be involved in planning some aspects of the program and evaluating the program
Be recognised for the valuable contribution they make
Be protected and maintain personal safety
Be adequately informed about prospective consumers so that they can make an informed decision about care
Say ‘no’ to a participant or placement
Complain about any aspect of the service that they are unhappy with through a grievance procedure without fear of retribution
Receive ongoing supervision and support from staff and the Board of Directors
Be assured their personal information is kept confidential
Volunteers are treated as co-workers
Support workers are paid in accordance with the relevant Award
